Mother’s milk is the best
food to support growing proses of baby. A conference in Italy in 1990 initiated
the Innocenti Declaration about giving only mother’s milk in the first 4-6
months after baby was born, which was called exclusive breastfeeding.
Indonesian government has also supported this program by issuing regulation and
acts including a regulation of providing breastfeeding corner in public
facilities. The rate of exclusive breastfeeding coverage, however, is still
categorized low. This study aims at finding out the existence, number,
placement, and standard suitability of breastfeeding corners in shopping
centers in Bandung. This study employed concurrent mixed methods with
concurrent triangulation strategy. Quantitative design of this study employed
observational method with cross-sectional approach through observation with
checklist. Qualitative design of this study employed phenomenological strategy
through in-depth interviews. This study was conducted in Bandung Region in June

using frequency distribution table. The quantitative study finds that 56,7% of
shopping centers in Bandung do not have breastfeeding corner; from 43,3% of
shopping centers with breastfeeding corner, there is only 3,3% which have more
than one breastfeeding corners which are placed on the first floor, and only
26,7% of them meet the minimum standard, whereas the qualitative study
describes existence, number, placement, standard suitability of the
breastfeeding corners. Most of shopping centers in Bandung has not complied
with the regulation issued by the government. Less strictness in regulating
acts is one of causes in low rate of exclusive breastfeeding coverage in
Indonesia. The government is expected to be strict and thoughtful in handling
the situation. Active cooperation from public place managers is also required
to realize breastfeeding corners according to the standard.
