Abstract
Background: Mother’s milk contains nutrition and
liquid needed by babies within their first six months. Breastfeeding will
reduce a risk of gastrointestinal infection, constipation, allergy, and
diarrhea. The success of exclusive breastfeeding was influenced by early
breastfeeding initiation (EBI). There were research results mentioning the
benefit of EBI, but they have not been implemented well. This research aims to
find out the implementation of EBI and impeding factors of it.
Research Method: This research employed mixed methods
with sequential explanatory strategy. Quantitative research employed
cross-sectional approach and qualitative research with phenomenological
approach. Data collection was conducted from November 2014 to March 2015.
Participants were who midwives working at Cangkuang community health centre and
Pharmacy Implementer Unit Kertasari. Sampling technique for quantitative was
total sampling. Inclusion criteria was midwives who were actively help in giving
birth, and exclusion criteria was midwives who hold Diploma 1 of Midwifery.
Total sample of the quantitative research was 16 participants. Sampling
technique for qualitative was purposive sampling with indepth interview to 11
participants. Data verification was done by data triangulation method.
Results: This research found 68.8% of midwives
did not implement EBI, and therefore inhibited the EBI. Inhibition factors
include midwife factor, system support, baby factor, and mother/family factor.
Midwife factor include knowledge, skills, attitude, and time management.
Mother/family factor, on the other hand, include knowledge, family attitude,
and mother condition.
Conclusion: Implementation of EBI has not run been
well-conducted and experienced many obstacles. No sanction to midwife who do
not implement EBI is one of the reasons. It is necessary to monitor the giving
birth attendance, especially the EBI.
